1) Why did you get into broadcasting? I had always been curious about being on the radio but never really knew how to start. But when I signed up for collage at SUNY Broome, I noticed they had a communication degree program, which included radio. I’ve always enjoyed entertaining people, even though I probably think I am funnier than you do. But if I can at least make you smile at the end of a rough day, I am happy.
2) What is your most memorable radio moment? So many! There was the time I was supposed to interview Eddie Money (may he rest in peace) before a show at Tioga Downs. We had arranged for him to call at a specific time that day, but as luck would have it, we had an issue at one of our tower sites that needed my attention at just about the same time. So when my phone rang and it was THE Eddie Money on the other end of the line, I felt a little awkward telling him I’d have to call him back!
Then there was the time Chubby Checker was supposed to play at Tioga Downs and I was going to introduce him on stage. But before the show could start, a thunderstorm came rolling in, which is bad news for an outdoor show on a metal stage. Everyone went running for cover when the rain started. Well, everyone but me. I had no where to go. Next thing I know, Chubby comes to the door of his tour bus and invited me on. I got to have the best conversation with this huge superstar. Just a casual conversation that I will remember for the rest of my days.
3) What is your personal motto? “I might be easy, but I’m not cheap.” & “Life is too short for cheap toilet paper!”
4) If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be? I’ve thought of this hundreds of times. As a kid, I had several dreams that I could fly like Superman and I would do it to show off to all the other 3rd graders who weren’t very nice to me. And I’m a really impatient traveler so flying would be great. At least until the FAA decided to regulate me.
5) If you could only listen to one album for the rest of your life, what album would it be? Its a toss-up between two. It would either be Journey – Greatest Hits or The Best of Collin Raye: Direct Hits. Ironically, both of those albums feature the song “Open Arms”.
6) What song might someone catch you singing in the shower? “Loco in Acapulco” by the Four Tops. If you’ve never heard it, look it up. But if it gets stuck in your head, don’t blame me!
7) What else should we know about you? I am a Army veteran and served during Operation Iraqi Freedom. It was there that I really learned how precious indoor plumbing really is. A porta-potty in 110 degree weather is NOT NICE! I love riding my motorcycle when the weather allows. I have lots of kids, both biological and chosen, as well as 3 beautiful grandkids.
