ARTIST STATEMENT: I view my paintings as narrative. I think of my pictures as dreams or links between reality and the subconscious. I use allegorical representations to explore aspects of the human condition. By using a limited palette I create a strong tonal harmony and a sense of space, atmosphere and mood in my pictures. I explore themes of isolation, nature, cycles, rebirth and death in my paintings. I often use disfigurements, amputations for example, as a physical manifestation of an inner turmoil; A sense of incompleteness or illness. Beyond the image itself, I want the paint to tell the technical narrative of my work. You will see it thick and thin, dissolved and sanded, my fingerprints, my dog’s hair and the creative motion of composing a picture rather than copying one.
